My Librarian Susanne: Once is not enough
Annotation:A time in the future when a fireman is someone who starts fires instead of putting them out- and what does he burn? Books! Fireman Guy Montag finds himself compelled to hide and read the books he has been burning. What does he do now?
Annotation:From the well known diarists like Anais Nin and Louisa May Alcott to an anonymous Japanese woman this is a perfect book to introduce you to the joys of reading and learning from other women's secret thoughts. It may inspire you to keep a journal to record your own secret thoughts.
Annotation:Bigger Thomas is a poor black man living in Chicago in the 1930's. When he unexpectedly gets a job working for an affluent uptown family he is thrown into a world that is confusing and scary because he doesn't know how to respond to them or their daughter. What happens is as shocking now as it must have been when it was published in 1940.
Annotation:Hamlet's uncle poisoned Hamlet's father so he could claim the throne and marry Hamlet's mother- that would be enough to drive anyone crazy. Not to mention a clinging girlfriend and a persistant ghost. A timeless story written in beautiful, bold descriptive King James English.
Annotation:Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway is balanced with a woman living in the 1960s and a woman living in the 1980s. This books made me think about the way that a person's future is interconnected with the decisions one makes in the past. Every time I read it I discover something new.
Annotation:The timeless story about how prejudice -racial, social and economic -affects the small southern town of Maycomb, Alabama. Don't worry about meaning or lesson when you read it, just let the author tell you the story in this vivid character driven book.
Annotation:The story of Mary Lennox, neglected and unwanted by her parents, but strong and 'contrary' enough that she doesn't stop until she finds the answers to her questions: Who does she hear crying night after night? Where does the ivy covered door lead to and where is the key? Why is her uncle so desperately sad? What kind of magic will it take to make the garden grow again?
Annotation:The original classic story of a mysterious count who can hypnotize with his eyes, lives in a run down castle and oh- lives on human blood . Also he can only be killed with a wooden stake through the heart. Still a creepy read with plenty of dark and foggy atmosphere.
Annotation:Every family has its secrets, but for the Wingo family what happened one summer afternoon was so random and horrifying that that they vowed with their mother not to ever mention it again. Along with the reader, Tom Wingo remembers bit by bit what really happened - and why it drove his brother to suicide. If you read it, you will be in on the secret too.
Annotation:Its tough when you are Maggie Moran and you have a certainty that your son will fall in love and live happily ever after- then that doesn't happen. Yet you are so sure that it will. It has to- doesn't it? A great story full of eccentric characters who you may recognize as members of your own family.
