Very different from the Shining. I enjoyed the world it expanded on. It's almost more fantasy than horror. I enjoyed reading about Danny's struggle with sobriety, which imo is what this is really about.

It has been many, many years since Dan Torrence’s time at the Overlook Hotel and things now have been going okay for him. He has a decent job, friends, a place to live in, it all seems to be going well for him, up until he meets a young…

Doctor Sleep has some glaring flaws that I found it difficult to get over. While the villains seem interesting and original at first, they eventually become a bore as most of them remain undeveloped personalities. More importantly, the…

Even though this book was long, which is expected of Stephen King books, it was worth the read. It is an excellent sequel to The Shining and it was able to show Danny Torrance as an adult and how he grew up to be. The characters are…

A good fun page-turner. It would be cool to see some sort of origin story for the villains.

I really enjoyed this novel, and enjoyed seeing the change in King's approach over the course of many years- The characters are compelling and the story is tense and scary, but also more ...optimistic? than I am used to with his work.…

I just discovered this bit of info.-Dick Hallorann explains to 8yr old danny about the "the black gramdpa" Andrew Hallorann. As a child, dick was told by this grandfather that if he didn't do what he wanted & was a bad boy he'd call…

Of course even in trashy horror sequels Shakespeare and the Bible get referenced often. King's an old windbag, he knows it. It was fun, seemed long but wasn't that bad. Two and a half weeks to finish while reading and finishing other…

Didn't think it was as good as The Shining. Seems like King lost his touch-- believable characters in unbelievable situations-- after Pet Sematary but that's just me. The novel does have its high points-- especially what it must be like…

I gave it all the stars, because it takes a good book for me to plow through something that thick in a week. Really, it was an excellent book. Stephen King's bad habits showed up at the beginning of this one, rather than at the end, and…

The tone of this sequel dances nicely around The Shining, and would stand well on its own even if you hadn't read the first novel. King's usual grit, extensive self-talk, and boogieman under the bed style of horror is shifted a bit by…

A worthy sequel to the Shining. I get the impression that Stephen King never intended to write a sequel, but at a certain point he thought you know, I think the time is right. What would Danny Torrance be like now as an adult, still…

I really loved this story! Now I'm sad because its over :'( Really good sequel to The Shining, perhaps not as scary, (though some of our favourite 'ghostie people' make a reprise) but pretty brutal. Now I'm ready to critique the film...

King is a very limited writer in terms of expression. Kubrick's exceptional "Shinning" is a complete remake of the story, King's writing, as illustrated once more by the pitiful "Dr. Sleep", can't hold a candle to Kubrick's work. It is…

Finished this in three sittings, and definitely stayed up too late to see how the story ended. This novel picks up after the events of The Shining with adult Dan Torrance dealing with demons of many kinds. Perfect for a "not-too-scary"…

The Shining has a sequel?! This book follows the psychic kid, Danny, into adulthood. It's no surprise, after what he's been through, that he's pretty messed up. This book builds slowly, showing Dan's path to sobriety, a girl with powerful…

Don't think it needed to be connected to the Shining, but a decent King read.

Very great read! I loved 'The Shining' so I might be biased in my love for the characters in this novel. Very easy read with an interesting plot. Had me on the edge of my seat from the middle of the book until the last page.

Very good story! It's an edge of your seat thriller that continues the adventure of Danny Torrence--the son of Jack Torrence--from where 'The Shining' left off. Great suspense and nice ghost story too. I really liked how the story explores…

Another requested book I did not finish - I had not realized that this book was a sequel to The Shining. Because the first part of the book was about Dan Torrance and his alcoholism, I simply could not stomach it. I lost patience with…

As a lifelong fan of The Shining, I expected a lot from this book. I wanted a sequel that had the same theme or ''feel' as the first book. This book, however; ties in with another book series he released many years ago. If you do not like…

An interesting King book that picks back up with Danny from The Shining. Very cool concept; seeing where he has gone in life and what has become of him. I found it to be an easy and quick read.

Dr. Sleep was a decent enough horror story once Danny (now Dan) Torrence of The Shining got his inner and outer demons under control. But getting there was a long, slow process and felt more like it was ghost written (ha-ha) by someone…

Was thrilled to find out what had happened to Danny and Wendy (Everything except for the "like father like son" part). Other then that I enjoyed the plot but like @Chiv80 said the book felt like it dragged on and on. The only thing i…
