What a great journey.
I had never heard of this book before. It was chosen for my Zoom book club and I’m glad I read it. I usually stay away from books that have more than one story being told as I lose track of who, what, where, when,…

“The elaborate search for a word, like the turning of a chain handle on a well. Dropping the bucket down the mineshaft of the mind. Taking up empty bucket after empty bucket until finally, at an unexpected moment, it caught hard and had…

'Transatlantic' takes you back and forth between America and Ireland, at three different times periods. The author is a master blending fact and fiction in remarkable prose. The George Mitchell section, giving his thoughts in the lead up…

Well written prose and imagery make this book worth reading. The author weaves a compelling story through generations on both sides of the Atlantic.. If you are looking for action, look elsewhere. However this novel is worth the time…

In the early chapters, I wasn't sure where the author was heading, but he did bring it all together very nicely and intelligently. He handled his characters with warmth and caring, while acknowledging their flaws.
Not as ambitious or…

Excellent. Different stories, all with Ireland in the background, foreground and in-between ground, that intertwine to some degree, but which are painted with such immediacy you can almost smell the peat fires burning.

Beautifully written, but it seems strangely lacking in action, despite the often dramatic subject matter. The author tends to downplay big events in favor of the quieter moods and moments that surround them.

I loved the first half of this book but feel it kind of fizzled out. It was like two (or more) different books. I thought the historical stories of Frederick Douglass, the two fliers and George Mitchell were absolutely wonderful, but…

While it's certainly possible that more astute readers will connect the snapshots described in Colum McCann's TransAtlantic into a cohesive narrative carried by ongoing conflict which would merit calling it a novel, I failed to find it…

Another outstanding book by Colum McCann. I love the way he takes seemingly unrelated stories and weaves a thread of commonality into them. Don't be out off by the jumps I time and place. This book was well worth the wait and should win…
"Spanning 150 years and two continents, this literary family saga from National Book Award-winning author Colum McCann ties Frederick Douglass' 1845 journey to Ireland with the first trans-Atlantic flight made in 1919 by two British…
Fabulous book - a must read.
If you find it 'confusing' (you may not initially 'get' how some of the characters relate to each other) ... just read and feel and don't worry about it ... it all falls into place.
Beautiful…
A story spanning 5 generations, from the Civil war to the present, and historical figures Frederick Douglass and George Mitchell, all inter-connected. "The sky lifted the hem of Belfast." A worthy successor to Let the Great World Spin…
