“New Kid” is a beautifully illustrated and beautifully layered book on what it’s like to feel out of place, to not quite fit in, to let go of who we think people or things are and see them for who or what they really are. Relatable for…

I read this after hearing that it was the epitome of Critical Race Theory being forcibly taught in elementary schools; both assertions are false, and the book is a delightful story of fitting in as a Black middle schooler in a prestigious…

A nice story with identifiable characters and ultimately a positive outlook. A good way to introduce kids to conversations about fitting in, especially when it comes to racial differences.

Why did I pick up a book for 8-year-olds? Strange. But I have to say it was good. Like, don't argue with that. If I'm honest I only read this because the book looked familiar. I'd seen (in my elementary) a lotta classmates reading it. So I…

I really was not a fan of this book. As reading it I found no interest in it.

I'm not really a graphic novel person, but this was one of my favourite graphic novels. It did a great job of showing microaggressions, not flat out racism (in most parts) but definitely quite a lot of microagressions.

I feel like as of recent, books that have been receiving a lot of hype have not lived up to it, that is not the case for this graphic. New Kid follows Jordan Banks who is sent to a prestigious private school for his seventh-grade year…

Wow this book is amazing. It has some references for parents, but this is intended for middle school to high school kids. It has to do with fitting in, prejudice, etc. I loved it.

A really good graphic novel. It tells a story that will be unique to some and familiar to others. Either way, it touches on the universal struggles of wanting to fit in and feeling like you don't. I think for some readers it'll be…

Winner of 2020 Newbery Medal and the 2020 Coretta Scott King Award for children’s literature. This is the first graphic novel to win the Newbery Award, and it’s a good one. I think this will be popular with many children age 10-14,…
