This is a really great bilingual book to share with an elementary audience wanting to get a flavor of everyday words and phrases translated into Spanish. Fortunately, there's a glossary in the back so you can easily see how to pronounce the different words. It also helps young readers identify with children from other cultures as they will hopefully draw similarities between Rosalaba's life and their own.

Abuela is a book about a young Hispanic girl by the name of Rosalaba. While Rosalaba is playing in the park she imagines what it would be like to fly over the New York City streets. She takes this adventure with her Abuela. They pass the Statue of Liberty and other buildings that are important to her immigrant family. Rosalaba goes with her grandmother from "el parque", the park, to "cerca del mar", getting close to the sea. Rosalaba goes on interesting adventures in Spanish that are easily translated into English. The book throws in words here and there in the text that are Spanish. However it is easy to guess what Spanish word Rosalaba and Abuela are using. For the words that are a bit more challengeing Rosalaba translates them for the reader. I think this book is great for children especially as an aid to learn beginners Spanish. There are simple words such as Abuela which means grandmother in Spanish. El parque (park), me gusta (I like), un gato (a cat), vamos (let's go), and other Spanish words that are translated in the book.
