Opinion

From Library Staff

A young girl sets out to prevent her best friend and other kidnapped children from becoming the subject of gruesome experiments in the Far North. This book, the first in a series, creates an amazing alternate world.

Book 1

I read this series when I was younger, and, when I saw there's a new show based on the books, I decided it was time to revisit them. I chose audio this time around, so I could listen while I did puzzles or drove. Man, I'm glad I did! The audio is incredible! It's narrated by the author and a full cast. That itself completely drew me in. The story is better than I remember, full of fantasy, mystery, and adventure. I'm looking forward to the next book!

This was a fun novel, if a bit dark for kids, and worked really well as an audiobook - it's pretty much a full-cast for the audiobook (or what seemed to be). I'll be continuing the series, but not rushing to the next.

I loved the audiodrama! The cast was amazing, and the story--though, Lyra was a little bit too clever at times (I wish she'd have struggled a bit more to piece things together)--was exciting and engaging!

Pullman's world building is undoubtedly original and imaginative, but the characters in this story are so uninteresting that not once did I care about any of them. Actually, that's not completely true. The boy who was severed from his daemon and eventually died--I forget his name--that one broke my heart. The story did pick up a little towards the end even though it was a slog getting there. I may continue on with the series some day, but for now I'm giving it a rest.

Great audio book narrated by the author. Loved that each of the characters had their own unique voice. It kept me engaged from start to end. If you like audiobooks you'll like this one.
