The factory was crowded, the room was full of flammable materials, and the door was locked so workers had to stay inside, conditions which led to one of the most lethal workplace fires, with 146 people dying. Who were the people working there? How and why had they come? And what happened in the aftermath of the fire to improve conditions for others? Illus. with period photos.

I think that the strength of this book lies in its extension beyond the Triangle Shirtwaist fire and into the tragedy's impact on labor laws and social justice.

I did not know this was a children’s book when I started reading it. Only after the author took time to explain items such as “bagels” and concepts like “strike breaking” and “scabs” did I begin to wonder. Marrin does a wonderful job of looking not only at the Triangle fire, but the causes leading up to it, the aftermath, and the long-term effects. He doesn’t shy away from the horror of what happened, but puts it into a perspective that children can understand without oversimplifying.

I think this is a National Book Award Finalist? I can't see with the library book barcode covering the award sticker.

A good account of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire of 1911. Although less than 20% of the book covers the fire itself, the rest discusses the harsh working conditions and negligence that led to this disaster, and follows up with changes in labor laws that resulted. The book truly captures the time and how the fire affected people's lives.
