From Library Staff

Written by young Muslims, this friendly guide empathizes with other Muslim kids about what it's like to be a Muslim teen in the U.S., and explains Muslim culture informally to non-Muslims.

CHAPTER 9: Halal and Haram: Can I Go to McDonald's?

“And do not eat of that on which Allah's name has not been mentioned, for it is surely disobedience. And certainly shaitaan will inspire their allies to dispute with you; and if you obey them, you will surely become polytheists.“ (6:121)

The instructions to declare Allah's name in verses 6:118 and 6:121 are stated in the past tense and the passive voice: 'has not been mentioned'. The requirement to declare Allah's name arises well before the food is cooked or served --- at the time of slaughter. Declaring Allah's name at the time of eating does not make unlawful food lawful.

CHAPTER 12: The Hijab Issue: Unveil the Controversy

About the obligatory of wearing hijab for women, please also refer to Surah An-Nur (24) Verse 31 which mentions 'headcovers'.

“And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.”
