Opinion

From Library Staff

Riotous, racy, and full of fabulous sixties outfits, this film celebrates one timid woman’s vibrant internal world. Giulietta is beset by zany, sexy spirits, seen only by her. Despite her wondrous identity, she is largely ignored by her egotistical, glamorous husband and family. (Italy and France... Read More »

The fantasy / theater of the absurd theme was not my cuppa tea. Not was the constant, annoyingly distracting noise. And, as one other reviewer commented, far too shallow for my tastes --- and VERY dated.

A rather wild and disjointed film. It is held together by the outlandish experiences (many simply imagined) of the main character which are informed by psychology - as it was understood in the 1960s (so, primarily Freud). The plot is continually interrupted by these imaginings by the main character, and then the film returns to reality. Ultimately the woman is able to acknowledge the truth and free herself from the grief of the fact that she has been cheated on by her husband.

VERY GOOD 1965 fun Fellini movie - in color! Yes, it's a bit whack with, um, unusual surreal film moments
I particularly enjoyed the performance of Guilietta Masini in lead role. There's LOTS of film time just focused on her attractive face.

This is the second time I have watched this movie. The first time I watched it, I was in my early 30s and I included the movie in a Fellini marathon lasting over 9 hours. I also watched the movie on a b & w small TV monitor.

When I watched the movie recently, almost 20 years later, I enjoyed the movie's themes and followed the plot-less story more easily than the first time.

I also know more about Fellini than I did in my early 30s.

Fellini experiments with LSD. The audience reaps the rewards.

Too much distraction in the film!
Besides, I don't like the betrayed wife's hallucinatory journey of self-discovery.
I love Fellini's neo-realistic drama such as La Strada (The Road) made in 1954.
Compared to La Strada, this movie is a junk.

I feel a little guilty for rating a Fellini film at 3 STARS out of 5. His first venture into colour [1965] is beautifully filmed and there are many memorable vignettes, but the story is far too shallow.
