The Chicken Squad
Book - 2014 | First edition
They're darling. They're daring. They know their shapes! They're chicks on a mission, and on this, their first (mis)adventure, the Chicken Squad launches a galactic backyard expedition. Meet the Chicken Squad: Dirt, Sugar, Poppy, and Sweetie. These chicks are not your typical barnyard puffs of fluff, and they are not about to spend their days pecking chicken feed and chasing bugs. No sir, they're too busy solving mysteries and fighting crime. So when Squirrel comes barreling into the chicken coop, the chicks know they're about to get a case. But with his poor knowledge of shapes ("Big" is not a shape, Squirrel!) and utter fear of whatever it is that's out there, the panicky Squirrel is NO HELP. Good thing these chicks are professionals. But even professionals get worried. Especially once they see that round, shiny, green, BIG thing in the yard. What if it's a UFO full of aliens who want chickens as pets? It's up to the Chicken Squad to crack a case that just might be out of this world.

Meet the Chicken Squad: Dirt, Sugar, Poppy and Sweetie. They're ready to solve mysteries and fight crime. Fortunately, a retired police dog is available to help.
Detective chickens. What more do you need? First in a series.
The chicks from The Trouble with Chickens are now the detectives and their first client is a squirrel who reports a scary green, round object in the yard.

Four yellow chicks might not be the best of detectives, but fortunately they have a retired dog to help them out in this silly, silly book.

Add a CommentIn this funny, fast-paced beginning chapter book, four chickens -- Dirt, Sweetie, Poppy, and Sugar -- are out to unravel the mystery of the BIG and SCARY object that has appeared in their yard.
Funny, fast read. If you like the author's picture books, you'll probably like this series. Third-grader approved!
Reminiscent of Hank the Cowdog and other famous farm/ranch heroes, the chicken squad is serious about their duties in the yard. When the squirrel comes to them for protection, they deliver. So much fun to see these little chicks do what they think is necessary to make things right. Looking forward to more adventures with Poppy, Sugar, Dirt and Sweetie!
The Chick Squad faces some difficulty with their witness, Tail, a squirrel who has trouble describing what he has seen that scared him. Sugar's interrogation of him shows how exasperated she is, in a hilarious way. Once they have identified what they think the object is, the chicks are on a mission to save their mom. Absurd antics ensue. While designed for children, this book can appeal to adults looking for lighthearted humor as well.
They may be small, yellow and fuzzy, but when the chicken squad is on the case, the mystery is sure to be solved! Lots of fun as a read-aloud and especially great for children graduating beyond easy readers.
An irreverent reversal and send-up of “Chicken Little”, this story is both clever and foolish. Both the panicky squirrel and the super-calm chicks get into a spot of bother but it all comes out right in the end. The misadventure turns mainly on the seriousness of the protagonists and the revelation of the “big and scary” danger. The whole bit is wrapped up by an amused, wise dog and a very patient mother hen and proves that when intelligence is brought to bear on stupidity, intelligence can be the loser.

Funny and fabulously illustrated. Great early chapter book for grades 1-3.
Fans of Scaredy Squirrel and younger readers who listen to Hank the Cowdog will enjoy this.
