My first Joyce Carol Oates book, a novela. A challenging structure with flashbacks and plot results that are left for the reader to imagine. I plan to follow up with another one or two novels to get an idea of Oates method.

This was really intense read. It had a deep sadness to it but also a strange beauty. The quirkiness of relationships & belonging was explored in a very unusual way.

A short, but definitely not sweet, novel with Oates' usual complicated characters. Thought-provoking and a good read.
