"In this visually arresting graphic novel, surfer and illustrator AJ Dungo remembers his late partner, her battle with cancer, and their shared love of surfing that brought them strength throughout their time together. With his passion for surfing uniting many narratives, he intertwines his own story with those of some of the great heroes of surf in a rare work of nonfiction that is as moving as it is fascinating." -- Provided by publisher.

I love this unexpected examination of grief and loss told though surfing of all things. It was beautiful and heartbreaking.

I originally grabbed this for my husband, it's just his style, but I loved it too. It was in the Teen Graphic Novel collection, but I think adults and tweens might like it just as much. I wasn't sure how the sections about the history of surfing (told in sepia tones) were going to mesh with the story of young love and loss (told in aqua tones), but it came together beautifully. The history broke in at just the right times to take a step back from the heavy emotions of the autobiographical parts. They kept it from feeling overly melodramatic. The fact that this is all a true story makes it even more beautiful. I think the gut punch of loss will effect adult readers more, but it won't be lost on the younger readers either.

Great drawings of waves; poor storytelling; flat; juvenile.
