One of the favorite bands of my college years was the The Specials. If you don't know ska, it is a mixture of reggae and punk and just plain fun to listen and dance to. The English Beat were far better known, but they are too pop for my taste. I played this album to death and loved every song.

Funny to me at least, but in the glorification of the Eighties (how ever is it that Eighties movies became a genre? The nostalghic recollection of when one's sense of being smug and self-satisfied was at its peak?) something gets missed. I guess it always does come down to a process of aculturation, during which one trades in one's own real experiences for the ones that are said to typify for class. The most typical example of 'false consciousness' that is to be experienced?) Well, the Specials were part of that time. Never heard of them? I guess no one wants to be reminded that some weren't rolling out of college and into a glorious career, with dreams of Heather Thomas and money to burn.
