Authored by the writer of Chasing the Sea, this collection of six fictional stories is derived from his knowledge of the "stans". The collection is depressing as each story brings tragedy to the protagonist. The stories may be creative and reflect reality for Europeans in countries like Afghanistan, but the book fails because it lacks change of pace and is boring. It needed stories of humor and warm relationships to balance the sense of gloominess. The reader is left wondering if happiness ever happens in these countries.
