We Are Totally Normal
Book - 2020
Nandan's got a plan to make his junior year perfect, but hooking up with his friend Dave isn't part of it -- especially because Nandan has never been into guys. Still, Nandan's willing to give a relationship with him a shot. But the more his anxiety grows about what his sexuality means for himself, his friends, and his social life, the more he wonders whether he can just take it all back. Is breaking up with Dave -- the only person who's ever really gotten him -- worth feeling "normal" again?

Add a CommentThis audiobook was so lively and humorous and the reader was so youthful and raw, sounding so much like the book's characters I forgot it was a book at all and not friends of my own, right There in my living room! The main character is complicated in a very real way and there are no easy answers with the ending, both sweet and sorrowful and yet, just right. Definitely looking forward to more from this author, a fresh new voice.
I tried reading this as a paper book first and could not get into the storytelling. Then I tried the audiobook and could not stop listening. The reader was so good and I will be looking for more by both the author and the reader.
This is definitely not the rom-com read I expected. It's much richer and more nuanced, with a truly unique style that mirrors the main character's drifting, questioning approach to his life and identity. Keep an open mind and this could be one of the best reads of your 2020.
