(The second book in the Ann Lindell series)

It's good to catch up with all the regulars from this series but this instalment is slower & more internal than the others. Many of the characters are in some kind of transition & living to a great extent in their heads. This makes for ponderous reading at times, despite the plot involving a series of murders of elderly men that Ann & her colleagues are trying to solve. At times, it seems almost a side story instead of being front & centre which would have improved the pacing.

This is book #6 in the Detectives Ann Lindell and Ola Haver series set in Oslo; the best thing about this book is that the series still hasn’t become Americanized; but (1) the story is weak to the point that you can easily see where it is going, and it does not actually finish but simply stops with important things left hanging, like it was time for the author to cook dinner; (2) it’s mostly about Ann Lindell and her supposed police partner appears very seldom; and (3) there are several forms of highly unprofessional behaviour on the part of the various police characters; it’s an inexcusably unsatisfying book and it’s not at all at the quality level I expected this time out for this author
