definitely a Resnais "period piece." For me, only worth it for listening to French
This is supposedly the most difficult of Resnais’ early films. The film may be related to an old love affair by a mother while in Algiers whose step-son is haunted by his previous experience as a military torturer of Algerian freedom fighters. The experiences were decades apart and we only learn about them years later in France. This film was part of the French New Wave revolution fighting fiercely against the conventional film method of the time. Lots of critics were bewildered and/or inappreciative toward what may today be considered a masterpiece. The DVD version I saw had the horizontal squeezed by about 5-10% making some of the faces appear to be too thin.
Depressing...slow...gloomy.. what a bore..
