Under suspicion for murder, a British war veteran is forced to confront the issues behind his desperate existence before it's too late: Has he always been the duplicitous chameleon that his ex-fiancée accuses him of being? Can he control this newly apparent sinister side of his personality? And why, if he truly hates women, does he in the end seek help from a woman--someone as straightforward and self-disciplined as he is unsure and seemingly out of control--to repair the damage to his mind?--From publisher description.

Charles seems like a very flat character - he does not evolve, and we never knew him prior to his injury. Even though he is not charismatic, there isn't even much opportunity to dislike him, as he is so limited in his expressions.
Nevertheless, the plot is intriguing and provides a decent suspense.
To me, the supporting character Jackson is what makes this book worth reading. It's refreshing to have such a strong woman with so much "word time" in a story.

I grimaced quite often with the constant offensive references to minorities, even though I understood the author is likely using them to portray reality - these kinds of disgusting accusations and events do occur.

Good but not great, in my opinion. Walters always does new characters and fairly unusual ones - but lately they don't vary much in type from book to book. Not too convinced about the relationship between Charles Acland and his former financee, either - he doesn't seem the type to have let her manipulate him to the extent Walters show.

Typical Minette Walters. Unusual characters. A review I read in the Toronto Star led me to believe I would be disappointed with the story, but this was not the case. I was unable to put this book down.
