Journeying to the central United States city of Bellona, where all have fled save madmen and criminals, a poet and adventurer known only as the Kid wonders at the strange portents that appear in the city's cloud-covered sky.

Imagine if James Joyce had set “Ulysses” in a post-apocalyptic ur-city of the future rather than in Dublin, and you’ll kind of have a sense of what this is like.

Words defy me. The gorgeous psyche! The red of the deep sea reflecting off that; an orchid growing through the red,, -- this book.
