The Santa Monica Library has all three paperback copies of the three books in this trilogy, but some thief has stolen the first copy!
According to the library computer the first book was returned last year, it is not on the shelf and the second and third copies remain checked out...
Anyone who steals library materials should be damned to the lowest level of Hades!

What a good book. This guy sure tells it like it, and how it likely would be if the USA suddenly became a second rate power. Probably a few groups not too pleased with how they are depicted here, but hey, the truth sometimes hurts. Highly recommended, looking forward to reading book two in the trilogy.

Interesting concept, great action sequences.

Having read Birmingham's Axis of Time trilogy and loved it, I was looking forward to his next series. While I can't say that I liked Without Warning as much as the Axis of Time books, I still enjoyed it. I am fond of going down the "what if" road. What if America underwent a cataclysmic change, one that affected the whole world? Of course, I always look at the personal angle - how would it affect me and my loved ones? How would I react? It's definitely led me to appreciate my life right now and to see how much I take for granted.

A disappointing book, overall, as the premise could have produced more interesting characters and situations, and fewer well-worn stereotypes and expletives. Birmingham is clearly aiming to have this turned into a screenplay for a summer blockbuster movie, as the gratuitous violence and car chases of the portions of the book set in Paris would translate well to the big screen - unfortunately, those parts are full of factual errors about the French and do nothing to advance the plot.

Read this book only if you need your "pro-America" biases re-inforced. Birmingham spends a lot of time in the book 'proving' how the world can't go on without the USA.

Birmingham's Axis of Time Trilogy was absolutely brilliant. Naturally one has high expectations of this new work. Sadly, it disappoints utterly and completely on many levels. John: stop trying so hard to be "kuhl". We don't need page after page of expletives. We do need better explanations of why things behave the way they do in your book.
