Spirit and Opportunity—named by a 9-year-old girl—are NASA’s Mars Exploration Rovers that began exploring the planet in January 2004. The photographs that they have sent back have confirmed that Mars was once a lot like Earth. They’ve survived temperature extremes, sand traps, and dust storms and were still functioning as of September 2009, despite the fact that they were only supposed to last three months. Illustrated with photographs.
