I read Lackberg's third novel first which propelled me to start from the beginning. This is a terrific crime novel which will lead you down paths you can't predict. The characters are well developed but I found the translation to be very awkward; broken in some places and clearly British (v. Canadian or American). For example, at one point the character "throws a fag out the window"; took me a moment to realize it was a cigarette. In this first novel, Patrik comes across as a love sick puppy which is interesting because the things he likes most about Erica starts to really bug him down the road.

I thought this WAS thrilling enough. I liked this very much. This must be the first in the series about Patrick and Erica.

Swedish novel about an author who finds the circumstance of her childhood friend's murder suspicious. The dead women's family holds a secret that is a clue in solving this one. The ending was not overly exciting and the decriptions of the police work needed to be a little more thought out. Nice spacing of the story but just not thrilling enough.

Worth reading, but really predictable. Too many indirect plot lines, awkward dialogue, and unbelievable storyline.

Excellent - well-written, good characters, great story. Will be looking for more of her books.

I agree with both KarenW and emerge that the style is reminiscent of Louise Penny. If you like Louise Penny and you have patience for her semi-autobiographical main characters, then you will be able to tolerate the same annoying trait in this book.
Both authors use their writing as therapy to air grievances against brother-in laws and/or spouses. I can take it or leave it.

How do the Scandinavians do it? Each character fully developed, small details of daily life seem charming - do they really drink THAT much coffee, and with pasties? The logistics of the crime and its solution believable. I am looking forward to enjoying more of Lackberg's mysteries.

Good and complex ( to the end ) murder/mystery. A tad long, but the characters are well drawn and the suspense is full of rebounds, dead-ends to keep us on the edge of are seats till the last (virtually) page. A great read. Very European in feel. Not your bing, bang, boum American copper novel.

It took me quite a while to get into this book, but as a library patron recommended the author I thought I would stick with it and I'm glad I did. Erica finds the body of an old childhood friend and goes from biography writer to crime solver. She hooks up with Patrik, a Swedish police officer, both to solve the crime and romantically and begins writing a true-crime novel based on her former friends death. As I said it was slow going at first with the introduction of MANY characters, but once the story started the ball really got rolling and I was up half the night reading what came next. It became very engrossing with all the characters and their different stories and secrets. I am starting her 2nd book in this series, The Preacher.
