Beautiful water colour illustrations occupy the eyes while the "reverso" poems summarize the classic fairy tale in each illustration from two different perspectives. The subtlety of the poetry style may be more impressive to older readers than young ones.

Fairy tale "reverso" poems, a poetry style created by Singer, includes two poems with the lines in reverse order with only the punctuation changing. Great artwork by Canadian artist Josee Masse is paired with the poems. As a challenge - as your child to create their own poem which can be read up and down!

Such a clever book - who would have thought there could be a new take on fairy tales?

As soon as I read the first page of this book, I knew my language-loving, puzzle-loving seven year old son was going to adore it. And I was right. :) His eyes lit up as we read the first pair of poems and he got what was happening.

Each set of two "reverso" poems, on the same same page, is the same lines, the second reversed from the first. Only changes of punctuation and capitalization are allowed. And here they tell two different sides of the same fairy tale: Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf, Cinderella and her stepsisters, Beauty and the Beast. I'm blown away by the thought required to craft these forwards-backwards stories. So intriguing!

Some of the poem sets are more successful than others, but overall the collection is very strong. The Sleeping Beauty and the Wide-Awake Prince is one of my favorites because of how perfectly it shows the "grass is always greener" effect. Mirror Mirror, the Snow White set, is chilling. Masse's split-screen painting for each set of poems is such a perfect match for the poems, it's amazing.

This book is wonderful. The idea behind it is so creative and relatable to children. The poems analyze not only the stories but all of the different characters within them. Each poem reversal helps the reader to look at the traditional story from a different perspective. To add to the wonderful text of this book, the illustrations are incredible. The characters are portrayed in bright blocky colors that seem to glow.

""Who says it's true -- down is the only view?" Who, indeed? In this clever book, each poem can be read two ways: from the top line down and from the bottom line up. The poems, inspired by familiar folk tales and fairy tales, take on different meanings when read in reverse but still make sense. Some of them give the villain's point of view in a funny way, and others (such as the Snow White-themed poem "Mirror Mirror") are more on the dark and creepy side. Word-lovers and puzzle fans will want to make up their own "reversos" after reading Mirror Mirror." The book of "Reverso" poetry is pure genius. You read the poem, and then the poem is reversed, line by line, creating a whole new and perfect story.

This is the book for people who say they don't like poetry.

Poet Marilyn Singer has invented a form of poetry that she calls "Reverso" where she writes a poem, and then rewrites, placing the lines in reverse order, changing only the punctuation. These poems are twinned to tell two sides of the same story.

In Mirror Mirror, Singer has turned her attention to fairy tales. She tells Cinderella from the point of view of Cinderella and the stepsisters, using essentially the same words. What results is a book full of unique poems that show us both sides of the same story, beautifully illustrated by Josee Massee.

This books is a must for Junior and Intermediate teachers looking for a new way to introduce their students to poetry.
