This original UK televison series follows three housemates as they do their best to live their lives as normally as possible despite their strange and dark secrets. Lovable George battles with his double identity as a mild mannered hospital porter who for one night of the month turns into a flesh hungry werewolf, Mitchell is a good looking and confident vampire trying to go cold turkey from his blood sucking urges and recently deceased Annie is a chatty yet underconfident ghost whose ex-fiance is the landlord of the house the three of them share. All this on top of the usual issues faced by young people surrounding love, work and mates and the only thing they have to rely on in their heightened world is each other.

Opinion

From Library Staff

A vampire, a ghost, and a werewolf walk into a bar. Well, not a bar but they move into a home together and try to live a "normal" life. It's poignant, creepy, and funny.

A ghost, a werewolf, and a vampire try to live a "normal" life together. What could be better than that?!

Being Human is honestly made by people with a lot of craftsmanship. The story line is a little hard to get behind. The ghost character can't interact with any but other "monsters", which is very limiting in the plot line. After enjoying a few episodes, I just felt like I wasn't interested in watching the next one. Still, they were of some interest. Not bad, just not exciting, (like Shaun of the Dead, for example.) After watching more episodes, which continued to improve, I am upping my rating to 3-1/2.

Absolutely loved the first few seasons of this show... however, the show does decline, and I didn't like that by the end of the series none of the main characters are even in it, but I was glad I watched it and it was entertaining throughout. Its worth checking out!

Nothing, and I mean nothing, beats the original "Being Human." I couldn't even get through 2 episodes of the American version.. I also couldn't really keep up with the UK show after pretty much the entire original cast left the show, though.. First few seasons are really great!

Bear with the first episode; thereafter things pick up considerably.

Smart, haunting, brooding and undeniably funny with the particular dry wit that only the British have mastered, “Being Human” is a decidedly different show, with a premise that sounds like the start of a really funny joke. “Get this. A vampire, a werewolf and a ghost are all roommates…” Negotiating around their natures without tipping off the general public requires a great deal of maneuvering, resulting in solutions that are heartbreaking or funny. The one episode of how poor George stumbles across a fellow werewolf who shows him how to deal with his lycanthropy is alternately hilarious and moving. The actors have a fine grasp on their roles (although the one of a dark-haired, dark-eyed brooding Irish vampire is rather familiar…) and act with verve and utter commitment. Whether trying to engage the neighbors, pick up women or deal with a vicious ex-boyfriend, these roomies are a cut above the usual night-time dramatic creations. Certain artistic choices are a little puzzling. Annie develops the abilities of a poltergeist in two episodes; why doesn’t she use this ability to plague her loathsome ex? Why doesn’t she wield stakes with her powers and kill vampires? Why can these vampires walk about in daylight but not be seen in mirrors or on film? Never mind; the creators obviously decided to accept certain things about supernatural mythos and ignore others and expected the audience to fall in line. For the most part, they stay solidly within the known parameters of supernatural lore; their choices don’t detract unduly from the plots. The initial story arc has the Mitchell dealing with his former vampiric mates while attempting to head off a possible undead uprising. The tension over this issue gets higher with every episode and involves his roommates as well, pushing the story to a thrilling and unexpected conclusion. This British import proves once again how fantastic the BBC can be when they bring their genius to bear.

I didn't know I would love this show so much, when I first checked it out. But Oh My Gosh it's great!

Plot twists at every corner.

Plus a super sexy vampire named Mitchell. You should watch this if you are into the supernatural.

I watched the first season of the American adaptation to this first and now having watched both I'm convinced that the BBC version is much superior. It starts slowly but by episodes 3 and 4 I'm confident you'll be sucked in. Some very good questions raised in a very good way. A nice normal household of a ghost, a werewolf and a vampire. It's well balanced the humor, the horror and the questions. Worth a watch.

Season one of Being Human is a science fiction drama with some humor as well. The three main characters are Annie the ghost, George the werewolf and Mitchell the vampire. They live together in a house in Bristol England that is owned by the former boyfriend of Annie. George and Mitchell work as porters at a local hospital while Annie mostly stays at home. All three tend to deny their true identities and live like humans as much as possible. This state of affairs leads to both grave and funny situations.
