Gilbert and Sullivan's classic musical comedy of mistaken identity comes swashbuckling to the screen with all the laughs, songs, and stars that made it a long-running Broadway smash. This spectacular production adds some contemporary flash to the classic farce which follows the adventures of a roguish pirate leader and his young charge through numerous love affairs and sword battles.

Yaaaarrrrrr, matey! It's the musical pirate's life for me. Singing! Swashbuckling! Modern Major Generals! Bonus: One song in here is called "With CAT-like Tread" and Kevin Kline is married to Phoebe CATes. It's like it was meant to be.

Oh, what a fun film. There are movies that stick with you, and this rendition of Penzance is one of mine.
The overall silliness of this operetta is enjoyable for all ages, the acting is just hammy enough to make you smile, and the skill needed to hit some of these notes and relay the quick pace of some of the lyrics is to be admired.
And it's just fun to see Kevin Kline in a puffed shirt and thigh-high swashbuckling boots.

Thomas, I believe that you inadvertently placed your review with the later version the CPL possesses.

This is the film based on the New York stage production; so, while it surpasses its predecessor in production values, it lacks the fizz of a truly live performance with audience. Great fun, nevertheless.

P.S. If you ever experienced a secret desire to have Frederic and the Pirate King run away together, this will certainly feed that fantasy.

Recorded live at New York's Shakespeare in the Park festival, 1980. Some film aspects are a little shaky, but overall production is excellent, a raucous bumptious romp!

I particularly enjoyed the Modern Major General song - what fun!

Somehow I had never seen any production of Pirates of Penzance. Now I have - thanks KCLS!
