"If things are not what they seem-and we are forever reminded that this is the case-then it must be observed that enough of us ignore this truth to keep the world from collapsing."
American horror author Thomas Ligotti's name came up a number of times in connection with HBO's recent "True Detective" story, so I decided to pick up a few of his books of short stories. I'm not sure why he isn't more widely read because I don't think it's an understatement to call him the heir to H.P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft scholar and biographer S.T. Joshi calls the long story that opens this volume "perhaps the very best homage to Lovecraft ever written." Like Lovecraft, he's less interested in blood, gore and horror conventions and more with the terror of the unknown and the fragile mental states of humans when confronted with something beyond their understanding. This collection, featuring a new spooky cover, is a great introduction to his work.
