Jeff Bridges should have won the Oscar for his portrayal of Rooster Cogburn rather than for the washed up country star in CRAZY HEART. If you've ever worked down South with an authentic "Good Ol' Boy," you know what a brilliant job Bridges did. The swag belly, the childishness, the toughness, the crackerjack wisdom -- it's all there. While not as totally riveting as NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, TRUE GRIT comes close. Add these films together with FARGO, and one could argue that the Coen Brothers deliver cinematic violence as well as anyone, including Michael Mann and Martin Scorsese.

It's always difficult to compare movies whenever "re-makes" are done. You'll have newbies claiming it's awesome, while die-hard fans of the original version will say the remake fell short of its trueness. I try to approach each version in its own "uniqueness"... so, having said that, I think this newer version was definitely a well done movie. Sure it's not the original John Wayne version, but a lot of it held true to the movie, as well as elements of holding true to Charles Portis' book.... then adding a little bits 'n pieces of the director's likings to it.

I do admit that a part of me was hesitant to watch it (being a fan of the original movie version), but after giving it a try, I can say that it was well worth watching it. Don't compare book, original movie version, and new movie version.... just take it for what it is in itself and you'll probably enjoy it!

This is a 2010 American western directed, written, produced and edited by the Coen brothers, based on Charles Portis' 1968 novel of the same name, which was previously filmed in 1969 starring John Wayne.
Although it is a tall tale, the film is nicely made so that you could want to see what happened between the missing years.
The performance of the newcomer Hailee Steinfeld is superb.
You could see her doing the best she could.
Compared to the new face, Jeff Bridge's performance is mumbly, lumbering, and self-indulgent.

I was surprised by how much I liked this film. The music and scenery were beautiful. The film was a good mix of humor and drama. My husband and I have very different tastes in film, and we both enjoyed watching this.

A better film than I expected, given I was a bit moody when my friend suggested watching it, and I do recommend it. Is it similar or different from the John Wayne film? I don't think I've seen his film yet.

Great film with a mix of action and comic relief. Hailee Steinfeld's performance is fantastic. This film makes a 20-something want to find more Westerns to watch.

I didn't think I would like this movie because it is a remake...what a nice surprise...excellent acting and directing...very entertaining....this movie proves a Western movie can still be made today and be so entertaining...The Coen Brothers are great once again!!!!

One of the few remakes that is better than, if not as good as, the original.

Ned - You answer me Rooster! I will kill this girl. You know I will do it!

Rooster - The girl means nothing to me - she's a runaway from Arkansas.

Ned- That is all very well. Do you advise that I kill her?

Rooster - Do what you think is best, Ned.

Wayne's version:

LaBeouf - What are you doing?

Rooster - back hands LaBeouf

Gotta love John Wayne's blase when delving out whacks of justice.

Lucky Ned Pepper: "What is your intention Rooster? You think one on four is a dogfall?" Rooster Cogburn: "I mean to kill you in one minute, Ned. Or see you hanged in Fort Smith at Judge Parker's convenience. Which will you have?" Lucky Ned Pepper: "I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" Rooster Cogburn: "Fill your hand you son-of-a-bitch!"
