Just real quick:
This book is fantastic - great storytelling, you learn a little something about yourself, and it has exposure to a culture that isn't commonly covered.
My only criticism is that it's for a younger audience than me. :-)

This story is all the good things everyone says.

I loved this story! The twist was the end, while kind of predictable, was great and dynamic and brought more to the story. I really enjoyed Anya's struggle with her identity and what that meant in regards to her family and her nationality. It was an accurate depiction of high school without being too stereotypical or "Mean Girls"-esque. And the ghost...man, what a fun, horrifying addition that makes this story unique.

This will always be one of my favorite YA comic recommendations! Brosgol initially drives the story with some of Anya’s bad choices, but they’re understandable choices instead of stereotyped teen behaviors. (Having worked professionally with teenagers, I love seeing them represented properly as three dimensional people.) The first time I read it, I was so caught up in the plot that I didn’t fully appreciate Brosgol’s art, especially her gift for facial expressions. This time, I slowed down to enjoy. Her art style is so crisp, and she gets so much done with just black, white, grey, and blue. I knew Brosgol's name because she did a little bit of work on Hopeless Savages by Jen Van Meter, and I'm so glad that led me to her.

It's a very very well illustrated graphic novel that i just couldn't seem to put down (although it was past my bedtime). Just some parts are not suitable for all readers, so just make sure before.

I picked this up for my 9yr old. I read it first to make sure it was ok. NOTE TO PARENTS... this book is NOT FOR UNDER 16! the main character is an avid smoker and sneaks out of class to smoke in the school bathroom. There is also adult related content (drunken party and sexual related parts) For those who have kids who scare easily, the plot involves a "seemingly" harmless cute ghost, who later turns out to be a ghost of a murderer who turns against our lead character in a frightening chase. Where it is a good book and very well illustrated, I would not recommend this to anyone but an adult audience. Call me over protective, but I just want parents to know what they are handing their kids to read!

I picked this up hoping to read the first five pages to get an idea of the book, an hour later I had finished the whole thing. This book captured me completely, the compelling and gripping plot was more than enough to hold my interest. While it's not anything revolutionary, the book created characters with depth and told a scandalous, unique tale packed with beautiful illustrations. I would highly recommend this for somebody who is unsure of graphic novels or is looking for something different.

Being from Russia, I totally love syrniki. One would not have to ask me twice to come and gobble them. If Anya had not been so obsessed with trying to be "cool" (like everyone else), she'd loved them, too, like Sasha. And that is just what Anya learns at the end of the story - it's COOL to be YOURSELF. Ghostly gorgeous!

Wow I loved this book ERMAGERD. All my friends at school were begging to read it lol!!! My fave part in da book was probably the Bleep Test for some weird reason, idk. Anyways great book!!! The Genres are probably Supernatural and Self-Esteem. So if ya don`t like those then this not the right book for you. If u do, THEN MUST READ.

“Anya’s Ghost” is a graphic novel about Anya Borzakovskaya, a teenage Russian immigrant. She lives with her mother and younger brother, and in desperately wants to fit in with her American schoolmates. Unfortunately, Anya’s peers don’t readily accept her, and she is left with only one friend. That is, until she falls down a well and accidentally brings home a ghost. Emily is over ninety years old, and died after falling into the same well as Anya and snapping her neck. The two girls quickly become friends, and while Anya likes Emily, she soon notices that perhaps the ghost isn’t telling all the truths she should be…

This graphic novel won an Eisner Award and a Harvey Award. It can be described as a supernatural coming-of-age story, and deals with real issues (such as those faced by new immigrants), and slightly less-real issues (what to do when you accidentally befriend a ghost, for example). The plot is interesting and will touch reader’s hearts while also giving them shivers. The characters are lovable and well-rounded, and the art style they are drawn in is absolutely gorgeous. The setting is familiar (a high school), and helps to bring a sense of closeness to the novel, as readers may feel as though the events are probable, and could actually happen.

Overall, the author of this review highly recommends “Anya’s Ghost”. It is a spooky yet sweet graphic novel filled with both supernatural problems and coming-of-age problems. There is no symbolism in this novel, and while there are some underlying messages about friendship, “Anya’s Ghost” would be better suited as a pleasure read than a ‘book talk’ or essay book. The author of this review believes “Anya’s Ghost” to be suitable for ages twelve and up.
