Guess I'm the 'bad guy' here. Personally, it held little to no historic value. It seemed that pages were with lusting love for the other. I speed read it and would not recommend it to anyone with a discerning interest in the Civil War. If you want 'romance', then rent a Harlequin novel.

Elle has taken on a most dangerous and demeaning task: as a free black woman she is working as a spy, having volunteered to pose as a slave in a southern household, in an effort to glean intelligence she can pass through her network to aid the Union cause. Complicating her efforts is Malcolm, a fellow infiltrator posing as a Rebel soldier.

I was charmed by this romantic tale and love that it was inspired by several real historical figures from the era. It was a joy to watch Elle and Malcolm's relationship develop. Well done! Looking forward to Cole's next title.

I avoid Civil War books as a rule, but I sure am glad I broke that rule to read this fantastic novel. I wondered if a romance with spies during the Civil War would work, especially due to the different backgrounds, but this book is absolutely brilliant. Elle is fantastic and needs to be in more books immediately. I cannot wait for more offerings by the author.

This spy adventure romance is one of the best I have read. Well researched, this isn't a historical novel that sugarcoats of what went on during America's past. Elle is a protagonist that is sharp and determined to aid the Union with her photographic memory and uncanny resourcefulness. Malcolm, another spy disguising as a soldier for the Confederacy, is charming and loyal as he begins to realize his feelings are much more with Elle as they work together. They become a lot more than partners in "crime" as they discover a plan that could turn the Civil war. A romance read that will not let you go.

You know that book you never knew you needed in your life? This is it. Set during the American Civil War, this is the story of Elle, a spy for the Loyal League with an eidetic memory, and Malcolm, a Pinkerton masquerading in Richmond as a Confederate. That's right: it's a Civil War Spy Novel. It's also an interracial romance. How does the author pull that off without tipping the power balance in the absolute wrong direction? Very carefully, very cleverly, and very adeptly. There are still issues of the times to overcome, but overall, this is one of the best historical romances set in the US that I've read, featuring wonderful characters, snarky, witty banter, and a true, well-researched look at the time in which it was set.
