This is the first book in the Ellie Quicke series by Veronica Heley. Ellie's husband has recently died, she seems to have been using her time and energy to help everyone in her church community plus volunteering at a charity shop. She leads such a sheltered life that she cannot drive or use a computer. Her husband took care of the finances and earned the living as well as being on church committees. This seems to have given her husband's aunt and her own daughter the impression that she's incapable of taking care of herself and can be bullied into doing whatever they want. When a ne'er-do-well, who runs a business buying and fixing up old cars to sell at a profit, is murdered and left at the altar of Ellie's church across from her backyard, her neighbor is the prime suspect. Ellie does not believe it, and befriends the young woman. Heley uses inserts from the bad guys to let us know that they think she has seen something that will incriminate them, and they are trying to kill her to be sure that they will not be caught. Unwittingly, she foils every plot against her, which results in a few laughs at their expense; however, they are in deadly earnest and the reader keeps turning the pages hoping that they will not manage to maim or kill her before someone discovers their evil deeds. Heley's characters pulled me in and kept me captive until I finished the book. She is a great suspense writer.
