Rather like Marvels, the miniseries by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross, this DC series explores the (pre-reboot) history of the DC universe through the eyes of an everyday man, a policeman. It probably comes up short compared to Marvels (it's hard to top that, let alone come near it), but it's good in and of its own right. Wein has a good sense of pacing and chooses well what he wants to deal with, taking the character from boyhood to old age, telling the stories of heroes during that time- heroes that seem to stay young from when he first encounters them to his middle aged days as a father- and Wein also comes across as someone who respects continuity. He's also supported by a large variety of artists, most of whom do their work well. There are a number of backups collected after the main story; some of these are touch and go- personally, some of the characters in the backups are just a bit too obscure for me.
