Miles Espanol is an amazing journey into the Spanish soul of Miles Davis--and beyond. In May of 2010, a group of Miles Davis alumni, New Yorks finest Latin Jazz players, and a contingent of exceptional Spanish flamenco musicians, gathered at Sear Sound Studios in Manhattan for an unprecedented recording event.

For some of us, Miles Davis' and Gil Evans' collaboration Sketches of Spain holds and has held a profoundly intimate grandeur: now in my fifth decade of Sketches being one of my all time favorite albums, I can recall repeatedly freaking out and galloping about the apartment in excited bliss to the track "Saeta" as a five year old... and oh! that sexy sexy change in the midst of "The Pan Piper!" So I was alarmed in the best possible way to learn of the 2011 release Miles Español (New Sketches of Spain), which offers a double album tribute to the Davis' & Evans' opus by some of Davis' musicians and a slew of Spanish musical masters. This album is magnificent, is enthralling, enchanting, and I am already planning excursions to meander about this whole new landscape. These artists are teaching me something more about what jazz has to say about interpretation and exploration. They bring a strong integration of flamenco, woven complex and evolving arrangements, with enough patience to allow their expressions to emerge, ripe and dripping.
