The residents of a California commune in 1970 decide to move to Alaska and live off the land there. Some of its members have an agenda that has little to do with peace and love. It's interesting to watch them interact with the serious homesteaders who are living in the remote area where they wind... Read More »

Sure, the members of this 1970's commune that resettles in a remote corner of Alaska say they're all about peace and love, but you find that there are other agendas beneath the surface.

I always thought I was meant to live on a commune, but the reality of commune-life can be far from idyllic. Set in 1970, Drop City, a California commune, decides to relocate to Alaska, where tensions rise between the commune and a group of homesteaders.

I love Boyle's writing style and the way he paints a scene. Unfortunately, Drop City covered a topic I just wasn't interested in. Debauchery has never intrigued me so the prolific descriptions of free love and rampant drug use got a little boring. There were a few characters that I came to care about so that helped. Normally, if I don't enjoy a story I rate it lower but Boyle really is a gifted writer. 5 stars for the writing, 21/2 for the story.

Another great offering from TC Boyle. Drop City takes a while to get moving but that's because Boyle is a master of detail and description to create atmosphere, scene and a sense of what's to come.

Once Drop City starts the flight to its new location, things really get cooking. The contrasts shown in the characters' personalities and struggles, changes in terrain and goals of the characters lends well to the plot.

Though I pushed myself to finish this book, I would not recommend it as it could have and should have been edited into half its length. It seemed that the interminable descriptions went on and on just for the sake of squeezing in as many similes and metaphors as possible. It would be better to say more with less.

Engaging, easy read. The first novel I've read after a loooong stint with graphic novels, and it kept me fully engrossed - I think I finished it in a couple of days. Written from a few different viewpoints, which was interesting.
