Cloud Atlas
An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution. The story is a time-shifting weave of six interlinking narratives, with diverse settings from the savagery of a Pacific Island in the 1850s to a dystopian Korea of the near future.

It was confusing at first because you wouldn't know that it's 6 stories being told at once. We were able to figure out once we got to the middle of the stories. It became interesting until the end.

A good movie. Liked the interweaving concepts and the references to other books and films that were added here and there. Filming was beautiful.

I watched this until the end but I will admit, I kept hitting the counter to see how much more I had to endure of this total non-sensical movie. I have not read the book so I don't know if it was the writers, producers or the director but it took the closing credits (with the actors in costume) for me to clue in a little.

The movie is great - interesting, entertaining, beautifully filmed - but the book was better. Also, the makeup sometimes takes a turn for the freaky - Hugo Weaving's Red Skull makeup in Captain America is better than his "Korean" makeup in the Sonmi segment. I wish I could unsee that...

After 3 months, I couldn't remember what it was about, so I took it out again. Appreciated it even more, the second time around. Increased rating to 4 stars from 3.5.
Original comment:
Interesting movie. It has 6 stories going on simultaneously and surprisingly, it held my attention for 3 hours. I think it needs to be virewed multiple times in order to get the full value from the film. I liked the reference from Jim Broadbent in the octagenarian version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, saying "Soylent Green is people !". This actually had a connection to the Korean Sci-Fi story in the future.

I have not read this book but found the movie very interesting. I was intrigued by how each story was tied to one another and felt that the plot kept moving at a good pace even though the movie was long. I am not a huge science fiction fan but thought that the futuristic parts of the film were enjoyable along with the other sequences. I do not think that I would read the book though after seeing the film.

Whoa!--I have yet to view this one and I have heard soooo much sort of "rotten tomatoes" type of reviews about it. Hmmm?! I think that it seems like it was some film project that went awry. Like, it Might have been developed into something that was a bit shorter in length, and then possibly a little less obscure or abstract?? Maybe?? I mean, it is Good to have the Imagination and the 'what if' quality to a movie; that is okay. But, if it gets to be so over the top and out of reach, plot-wise, for Any viewer...well, .... I Do think, though, that the caliber of the actors is there! Jim Sturgess, Tom Hanks. I have not seen Halle Berry in too many films, but she might be adequately cast in this one. The cinematography looks interesting. The locations and the time periods are intriguing. Perhaps this one is best left to an author, in book form? I will Still see it to find out what I really think. I always watch it myself in the end to make up my own mind about the overall quality and appeal of anything cinematic. It's harder these days to find a film that has enough substance in it and less of the blood/gore and massive technological elements that so often detract from making it a rewarding experience to watch. I'd like to be truly entertained, you know!! Something worthwhile. But, again...I Am curious and am going to give this one a chance to find out what all the 'hullabaloo' is about. heh!

Well, Guess What, folks...? I got to See it!!! This CLOUD ATLAS film. Yeah, it's Long! ehh. But!, I liked it better than I might have thought. Here's why: the Imagination and creativity that went into it was outstanding, for one thing!! Then, too, I think that ALL of the actors did a fine job! This takes a lot of doing for each actor to be made up for the different eras and to inhabit the different characters and their psyches! Not an easy task!! I liked how there were different directors for certain story lines. Noticed Tom Tykwer in that mix! He was responsible for a great film by the name of "Run Lola Run!"
Halle Berry did a fine job, especially as the reporter from the seventies, "Zodiac" era in this one! Very realistic portrayal! Jim Sturgess was outstanding!!! And, Jim Broadbent! Whoa!!! ~excellent!!! Ben Whishaw was another Great one for this type of role--good to see him! As usual, T. Hanks was in fine form.
The locations, and the cinematography were amazing. That actress Doona Bae (if I got her name correctly off top 'o my head! heh!) was Brilliant! Loved having her in the more Sci-Fi landscape portion of film; she added a Lot to the experience!! She and Jim made a wonderful pair in the story!!
That part with J. Broadbent breaking out of that miserable 'home' with the friends was Hilarious!! Just fantastic! Ohh, ohhh...sorry, don't wanna spoil plot(s) for anyone, here! Sigh...! IF you love fantasy, Sci-Fi, or an unconventional type of movie, SEE This One!! You will enjoy it immensely! I know I sure Did!!! Well, some of it..eheh! Editing is always a good thing, but for the most part this was a decent film. Just a little bit on the long side. I recommend taking a break between portions of it, then coming back later and resuming the viewing when time/mood is permitting....! :)!

This film richly repays close attention !

Isaac Sachs: Belief, like fear or love, is a force to be understood as we understand the Theory of Relativity and Principles of Uncertainty: phenomenon that determine the course of our lives. Yesterday, my life was headed in one direction. Today, it is headed in another. Yesterday I believed that I would never have done what I did today. These forces that often remake time and space, that can shape and alter who we imagine ourselves to be, begin long before we are born and continue after we perish. Our lives and our choices, like quantum trajectories, are understood moment to moment. At each point of intersection, each encounter suggests a new potential direction.

Haskell Moore: There is a natural order to this world, and those who try to upend it do not fare well. This movement will never survive; if you join them, you and your entire family will be shunned. At best, you will exist a pariah to be spat at and beaten-at worst, to be lynched or crucified. And for what? For what? No matter what you do it will never amount to anything more than a single drop in a limitless ocean.
