From Library Staff

Dani is excited to start school, but is sad when she learns that her friend Ella will be moving.

This beginning reader chapter book is too sweet to leave off this list, even if only the stronger readers will be able to get through it. It would be a charming read aloud, too. Dani and Ella are friends, and every day is a new adventure--sometimes happy, occasionally . . . challenging.

As a daycare worker/early childhood educator, I find this book very interesting. It introduces concepts such as "passing away", "moving away", and different emotions. I find this is important to let little children know about different feelings and different family structures.

I read this book to my son who is between Kindergarten and First Grade. He had avoided this book, but I really wanted him to hear it. He was hooked pretty fast and my older son couldn't help himself but to listen in. The voice in the book does a great job of capturing the voice of the child. Unlike some other early readers that use simpler language for the sake of the reader, this one just felt genuine. My boys both love to hear stories where the other children so clearly express their feelings and experiences...but they won't read them on their own. This was a great read-aloud for us. It reminded me of a more grown up version of "What Happens on Wednesdays".

Also, the 134 pages is deceiving. It is a very fast read. Lots of pictures and not many words.

Really good book. Suitable to read to ages 5 and over, or for ages 7 and older to read mostly by themselves.

A sweet, funny illustrated chapter book about a young girl with a lot of optimism—even if sometimes life makes it hard to be happy.
