An old fashioned epic war novel, with Australian nurses at the center. Kind of eccentric, though, its pages are indiscriminately packed with details, all related in the same breezy, chatty voice whether describing horrific tragedies or going out for tea in London. Sometimes I found the chatty voice annoying, but otherwise it was a fascinating read because it gets you really close to the action.

An interesting story, but it was long and I felt uninterested a few times throughout. I will say that Keneally knows how to write an engrossing story. I loved how the relationship of the Durance sisters grows and how they learn to rely on one another.

I just felt confused a few times on the switches between the two girls and with how dragged out some scenes were.

The rather formal writing made for a bland and not very appealing story. I couldn't really get into it, because it didn't feel all that real.
