Once, John Toffler's concerns were limited to wringing rent out of his mysterious roommate, Kyle, and measuring the growth rate of moss for his graduate studies. Then one morning he opened a letter intended for Kyle and his ordinary, modern life vanished. Now, having escaped the desolation of Basawar's wastes and a brutal battle between Fai'daum revolutionaries and Guan'im cavalry, John has climbed the Thousand Steps to the heights of Rathal'pesha in search of a way home. Among the mystic warrior priests, he witnesses astounding magic and learns that the golden key he lost-the one that can open a Great Gate and allow him and his friends to return home-lies within his reach. But not even the remote mountain monastery of Rathal'pesha is safe from violent turmoil in an age of rebellion and religious warfare. Soon John is drawn into the heart of a power struggle that will decide who will live and who will die on the Holy Road. --Amazon.com.

An interesting and original fantasy. I liked that the main charecters in the story were gay but I was a little uncomfortable with the how detailed some of the sex scenes were, maybe I am becoming a bit of a prude in my old age.

Whatever I said about the first book, forget it. Everything, well nearly everything is explained in this second book and it gets much better. Which, when I think about it, seems to be Hale's particularly peculiar style of writing, as she did the same thing with her first book of Lord of The White Hell. Anyone whose read it can testify to the confusing and at times disjointed grammar and such, and yet I get the feeling now this is actually her particular style. She wants to confuse and dislodge you the first time around only to see if you come back for more. And you should, because I have also found that each time I did NOT give up, it was worth the wait the second time around.
