I just heard the Fresh Air with Terry Gross interview of Salvant. I've never heard of this singer before, but she has great vocal range. I have no idea how you can "hate" someone that you've never met as the person below states, but I LOVE HER VOICE! "Self-indulgent wallpaper"? I don't think so. What a racist, clueless fool! Recognize talent when it is there!

Please disregard the mean-spirited comment below. To me, Cecile Mclorin Salvant is the best jazz singer performing today. She has absorbed many of the strengths of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn and Betty Carter to create her own singular personality (complete with over-sized eyeglasses with a white frame). Her classically trained voice has an astonishing vocal range, she has extraordinary musicianship and a devilish sense of humor. This is her first, and so far her only solo CD, although she is apparently working on another one. She was 23 years old at the time, winner of the Thelonius Monk jazz competition three years earlier. This is a very good album, although it doesn't capture the joyfulness of her live performances. This can be experienced by watching a number of her live performance clips on Youtube. She is already an extraordinary singer, destined to be one of the greats.

Simply because the limousine liberal whities at OPB like her so much, I'm inclined to hate her. Also, I do not like Cecile's voice, nor do I find her delivery even remotely earned or plausible. Perhaps after the age of 40, she ought to try again, after having lived. Right now all she amounts to is self-indulgent wallpaper.
