True Stories of Becoming A Nurse

This volume collects the stories of nurses at all stages of their careers: passionate, terrified, sometimes simply exhausted, as they discuss their experiences and the nursing profession, one of the most challenging and underappreciated jobs in the world. Often, nursing demands technical expertise; sometimes, as these stories reveal, patients also need something more basic: a hand to hold, or someone to listen closely. Being on the front lines of medicine requires empathy, fortitude, knowledge, and grace. Nurses, now, more than ever, are the backbone of the healthcare system, the first line in providing the best possible care for all patients.

I was a nurse up to 30 years ago and I really enjoyed this book. The nurses of today have many more responsibilities than we had back then.

In a world where nurses depicted in shows like Grey's Anatomy, House, Private Practice, and even Nurse Jackie, the world has an egregiously wrong idea of what nursing really is. From the mouths of actual nurses come the stories we rarely tell - the ones that talk about what we really do, why we matter, why we shouldn't be forgotten or fired or underplayed.
I also found this book cathartic because we, as nurses, often don't say these things even to each other and it's a relief to know that how I feel is the norm.
Written with thoughtfulness, honesty, and a somewhat dark sense of humour (what did you expect?) this collection of stories is a great read. I recommend it to both nurses and non-nurses, realizing that the former will probably enjoy it more.

This book is seriously awesome. Okay, so I'm a nurse, but I think that nurses don't tell our stories often enough. Reading this book was cathartic for me; I was alternately choked up or laughing. Many of these stories focus on patients dying; it's not that all of these nurses work in areas where dying is all that common, but it's both one of the hardest and most rewarding parts of our job. Highly recommended.
