I absolutely adored this album - it was probably my favorite of all of KT Tunstall's. I do love her upbeat songs, but this album just worked so well as a slower, more mellow album. Her lyrics are very poetic and she delivers her songs soulfully. She has an incredible range in singing - "Yellow Flower" is delivered with low, intimate vocals, while "Invisible Empire" features higher vocals. When I first listened to it, many of the songs sounded similar to me, but each one was really beautiful in its own unique way, and I grew to appreciate each individual song instead of the album as a whole. "No Better Shoulder" is the highlight of the album - a powerful song that left me with a mixture of hopefulness and longing. Over 5 and a half minutes, it builds from KT's guitar to an entire symphony of guitars, drums, keyboards, and harmonious vocals. The lyrics are sweet, simple, and happy. This album is powerful and gorgeous.

KT Tunstall starts off by expressing a wish to tear down the pinnacles of her invisible empire. And that's exactly what she does on this unexpected album - eschewing her usual stadium-filling hooks and abandoning her former Weird Rock Star persona to make a mellow folk-country-rock album full of simple, honest songs of love and self-discovery. This kind of 90 degree shift can be dfficult, and indeed this album can be boring at times for fans of Tunstall's earlier work. But she seems right at home, and each song feels like a labor of love. This is a textured album that offers plenty of pleasures upon close listening, even if it doesn't stick with you for long afterwards.
