I remember when this movie came out over 30 years ago(?) I was fascinated because it starred Jodie Foster. For some reason, I never saw it but I just tried to watch it the other day, I could only get through about 20 minutes. It has no energy, almost dated, Gary Busey is annoying and Jodie from what I saw is just a beautiful young ingenue who somehow got lassoed into doing this turkey. Skip it.

Low-key, gritty portrayal of the lives of folks who work the traveling carnival circuit. The three lead actors were believable in the fairly simple plot; a young Jodie Foster gets the opportunity to play an adult role and she delivers. Gary Busey is wonderfully manic as a clown in the dunking tank, and Robbie Robertson coolly keeps an eye on everyone and everything around him. The supporting cast was good; including all the sideshow freaks, who were treated as regular people. This was released in 1980 but definitely has a late-70s feel to it.
