M.I.A.'s "Arular" and "Kala" are two of my favorite albums of the 00s, but I've been really disappointed with her past two records. "Maya" was just an aural c.f.; all over the place in the worst way (cool Suicide sample though). I don't even mind that she says ridiculous things or is a millionaire who thinks she's a political activist ("I put people on a map who've never seen a map."). Her blend of musical globetrotting, brash attitude, and radical chic quickly went from charming to shrill. "Matangi," named for a Hindu goddess, is marginally better and more coherent than "Maya," but nowhere near the quality of her best work. "Bad Girls" is a standout single, but it's so good that it just highlights the weakness of the rest of the songs. Yeah, quite a comedown from her awesome early albums.
