In this alternate history of the world, dangerous ghosts are popping up everywhere, and only people between the age of about 8-16 can see them and fight them. This book tells the story of a small independent agency in London that deals with the ghosts. It's exciting and read beautifully, and it's... Read More »

British actress Matilda Raison reads the tale of a world where ghosts are real, threatening, and can only be battled by children.

Add a CommentSuch an amazing story with great characters and a unique world setting. I highly encourage readers to listen to the audiobook instead as it had a greater impact on the senses. Miranda Raison does a really good job as the narrator. If you want to read a good murder story, with some really interesting YA characters, and some legitimately scary hauntings, then definitely pick this story up.
This audiobook reader is fabulous, and the story itself is really interesting. I loved the premise and the world, and the characters were great fun. It's spooky and creepy without getting into true horror territory, and it's a great choice for a road trip listen.
Legitimately scary ghost book - love this series!
In a re-imagined modern day London, there's a ghost epidemic, one that can only be kept at bay by psychic children. Stroud gives his young readers a great deal of credit via strong characters and pithy writing. The audio performance is excellent.
Great ghost story - 3 British teens putting ghosts out of business.
London is plagued with hauntings and the only people who can see the ghosts, therefore the only people who can rid London of them, are kids. Unlike most juvenile stories, The Screaming Staircase, laces adventure with wonderful relationships that show real growth throughout the story. The narrator read with enthusiasm and is wonderfully British. I can't wait to listen to the next book coming out this Fall!
I will read (or listen to) anything with Jonathan Stroud's name on it. Kids who run their own business, ghosts and a mystery-- what's not to love? The narration on the audiobook is excellent and pulls you right in. This is the first in the best kind of series: this story has a definite end, but the characters will come back for another adventure and there's a larger story arc.
Definitely listen to this on cd or downloadable audio. The voice actor does a wonderful job.
If you're a fan of Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus books you will enjoy this story as well. I can't wait for next one in the series.
Original use of the post-living: no vampires or zombies! Also has a fairly good mystery sub-plot.
