"PLANETARY has been hailed as a timeless story that turned modern superhero conventions on their heads.Written by Warren Ellis (TRANSMETROPOLITAN) and with stunning art by John Cassaday (Astonishing X-Men), this critically acclaimed, landmark series took a look at the inter-dimensional peace-keeping force known as Planetary. The trio on the ground includes Elijah Snow, a hundred-year-old man, Jakita Wagner, an extremely powerful woman, and The Drummer, a man with the ability to communicate with machines. Tasked with tracking down evidence of super-human activity, these mystery archaeologists uncover unknown paranormal secrets and histories, such as a World War II supercomputer that can access other universes, a ghostly spirit of vengeance, and a lost island of dying monsters. All 27 issues of the original series are collected in this hardbound omnibus edition"-- Provided by publisher.

This is a big chunk of book you are getting, something you would expect to see Destiny from the Endless checking out at the library. I liked the fact that they included the original covers as well because that was a big part of the Planetary experience (Along with waiting over a year for an issue. Zing!) They really were creative in co-opting and changing up their logo, it reminds me of when Safeway decides to rearrange their inventory because you’re buying too many of their products and you spend the entire night lost in a supermarket looking for where they hid the peanut butter. It felt like Planetary was a conspiracy against its own fan base but still consistently was one of the best comics of the year, even in the years where they didn’t bother to put out any issues. Zing!

You also get an introduction from Alan Moore which is funny because you really don’t see Alan Moore writing that many intros to DC Comics these days and ties into an idea I had spun out of some of Warren Ellis’s other work. Imagine a giant Crisis on Infinite Earths type crossover but the big reveal (in the first issue) is when a Phantom Stranger type character explains to everyone, “The Supreme Being that created you, your soul, this planet, this universe; he sold all of that away. Partially because he was offered a lot of money but also because your God was just getting bored with managing this universe and wanted to spend more time with his family. Anyway, the new God Corporation that bought you and this universe (several years ago, BTW) is not really happy with their investment and they are shutting everything down. I’m self aware so I know these things and figured you should know as well, but first thing on Monday and this universe ceases to exist.” How would super villains take the news? How would super heroes handle it? And why is it that some of the Wildstorm universe has been integrated into the New DC Universe (Don’t worry Midnighter, kids love violence. We already got your own book lined up) but others like Planetary have not made an appearance? That we know of. There’s a story somewhere in there.

I consider this to be Warren Ellis' Opus. This work explains why I love Warren Ellis: dark and yet hopeful, deconstruction fleet/reconstruction fleet all in one. Cassaday's art is amazing. The story arc is brilliant. The scope and the vision and the ambition is amazing. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
