This book is clever, but the concept is too clever for my 5 year old to really grasp well. It might be ok for like a second or third grader?

We didn't love this book. The illustrations are great, but the story is so-so. My boys are 4 and 6.

Bibliophiles adore books. Part of the joy of that is sharing them with others. But, yes, we’ve all run into that person who insists on telling us everything—and I mean everything—about the book we’re trying to enjoy. That particular annoyance starts for this boy right on the cover as various animals follow him about, already commenting on the book he’s holding. The illustrations carry on through the title page, past the copyright and on through the dedication as we follow the boy in his travails—I mean, travels.

As in an Aesop fable, where critters stand in for pestiferous human beings, each animal the boy meets has something ruinous to tell him about his books. Colorful, jangly-looking marks emanating from a child-like drawing of a house tacitly suggest that home is just too noisy for the boy to read. So he takes his books into the open where he encounters a number of beasts eager to chime in with their opinions about his reading matter. The story careens on, with the poor kid climbing on and off the pages as he tries to immerse himself in his book, which turns out to be about…

Well, I don’t want to spoil it for you.
