"Ask mother" says the message scrawled in lipstick at a muder scene by an unknown serial killer who preys on women. It's a sensational story--if it bleeds, it leads--and a news conglomerate offers a big promotion to the high-level company exec who solves the case. So begins the wheeling, dealing and backstabbing of the competing media hotshots as they vie to unmask the so-called Lipstick Killer.

1956's "While the City Sleeps" is an unwieldy, uninspired mix of film noir, serial killer thriller, and journalist drama. A man, dubbed the lipstick killer, is murdering women and local journalists want the scoop. It doesn't display much of the tension, mood, and visual style of director Fritz Lang's best films, aside from a chase scene in the subway. Despite a good cast, the acting is mostly underwhelming: Dana Andrews, Ida Lupino (a bright spot), George Sanders, Vincent Price (sans trademark mustache), and John "Father of Drew" Barrymore Jr. as the killer. This movie might put you to sleep.

Mad Newsmen. It's all fun and games until someone puts out his fiance as bait for a serial killer. Dear, pretty Dana Andrews has many drunk scenes, which mirrored his life at the time. SPOILER: a clever screenwriter would have had Ida Lupino's character win the contest, but that would be a different and better world.
