It's the setting and atmosphere that are so compelling in Alan Furst's espionage novels of the years before and during World War II. In this novel there is just enough character and plot to keep you on tenderhooks as Cristian Ferrar and his partners arrange clandestine arms shipments to the Republican forces in the Spanish Civil War.

Oh, Alan Furst...you know what you're getting, anyway! And Daniel Gerroll is a great narrator for this kind of book, just dry and cultured enough to lure the listener in. The plot was pretty weak sauce this time around, though. Farrar was clearly the protagonist, but his associate was probably more interesting. I'd recommend reading/listening to "The Spies of Warsaw" or "Dark Voyage" first and then moving on to this one only if you're a true fan.
