Sophie Winters nearly died, twice. The first time, she's fourteen, and escapes a near-fatal car accident with scars, a bum leg, and an addiction to Oxy that'll take years to kick. The second time, she's seventeen, and it's no accident. Sophie and her best friend Mina are confronted by a masked man in the woods. Sophie survives, but Mina is not so lucky. When the cops deem Mina's murder a drug deal gone wrong, casting partial blame on Sophie, no one will believe the truth: Sophie has been clean for months, and it was Mina who led her into the woods that night for a meeting shrouded in mystery. After a forced stint in rehab, Sophie returns home to a chilly new reality. Mina's brother won't speak to her, her parents fear she'll relapse, old friends have become enemies, and Sophie has to learn how to live without her other half. To make matters worse, no one is looking in the right places and Sophie must search for Mina's murderer on her own. But with every step, Sophie comes closer to revealing all: about herself, about Mina and about the secret they shared.

A bisexual and disabled girl tells her disquieting story of tragedy and substance abuse recovery in a powerful narrative that goes back and forth in time.

Alternating between past and present, this story begins with a crime, which is then unraveled by our narrator, 17-year-old Sophie, as she describes how she got to the point where her best friend Mina was murdered. School Library Journal describes it as a "romance [that] is full of struggle a... Read More »

Pretty decent mystery novel... I found I didn't care about the characters as much as I should have, but I also didn't predict the ending (which I can usually do!).

This book has a compelling mystery that kept me glued to the book. At the same time the relationship between Mina and Sophie is so fleshed out and loving that even a few years after reading it my heart aches still for Mina's tragic death and Sophie's desperation to understand why every time I lay eyes on the book.

Full of mystery and suspense! Plus a super cute bi girl and the book isn't revolved around her being gay or the romances she's in so it's great!

So much more than a mystery or a love story, this is the only book I've ever missed a train stop for! Sharpe's lyrical writing keeps you reading through exquisitely-paced revelations and emotional switchbacks.

I didn't realize this was Young Adult fiction until I got it home. Because it's YA, expect unrequited love/a love triangle and lots of mooning over the secret love. Unlike much YA, this one is well-written, with a very believable main character who's introspective and deep. The mystery is well paced and plotted.

This book was absolutely fantastic. I could not put it down for a second. I loved the way it told Sophie's story, switching between different periods of her life, in a way that brought everything together at the perfect time. It is not often we get to see a bi protagonist, and the combination of murder mystery and heartbreaking love story makes this book beautiful. So, so well written. I loved reading about the people in this story, and the way they related to each other. So many emotions in this book. Absolutely beautiful.

I had heard great things about this book before going in, but nothing prepared me for the emotional rollercoaster that was Far From You. With a bisexual protagonist trying to solve the murder of her best friend who never got around to being her girlfriend, this is both a sharp-edged mystery and a moving love story that transcends genre boundaries. The balance of mystery-solving and reflective introspection was managed extremely well; Sophie's emotions and thoughts seem so real and relatable that I teared up multiple times (in public!) and had to take breaks to get my feelings back under control. This is a book about survivors and victims, and what it means to wait for someone to love you. It might not be a good fit for everyone, but as a bisexual woman myself I related to Sophie intensely.
