It is 1942 and the German submarine fleet is heavily engaged in the so-called 'Battle of the Atlantic' to harass and destroy English shipping. With better escorts of the destroyer class, however, German U-Boats have begun to take heavy losses. This story of one U-Boat crew details how these submariners maintained their professionalism as soldiers and attempted to accomplish impossible missions, while trying to understand and obey the ideology of the government under which they served.

An excellent and gripping film about the crew of a German U- Boat in WW2.

This is a 1981 German epic war drama written and directed by Wolfgang Petersen, based on Lothar-Günther Buchheim's 1973 German novel of the same name.
This DVD version includes an hour-long additional footage as the director's cut---a 209-minute-long version.
It depicts both the excitement of sea battle and the tedium of the fruitless hunt, and shows the men serving aboard U-boats as ordinary individuals with a desire to do their best for their comrades and their country.
It is a claustrophobic tension-filled psychological drama with a hell of breathtaking thrills at the edge of your seat.

Terrific film. K-19 for another realistic fact based film.

There are more war movies out there than one can watch, this is one not to miss. In fact, it may be the only one you need to watch. Done!

Excellent World War 2 movie told from the perspective of a German U-Boat crew. Don't watch this film if you are claustrophobic as much of the film takes place in the cramped quarters of the submarine. Very compelling viewing.

According to imdb, at 209 minutes, this is the director's cut rather than the even shorter 149-minutes release, allowing the terror of the repeated depth-charge attacks to build.

A good movie that illustrates we movie watchers don't care what side, what cause, and against whom a group of men are fighting for and attempting to destroy the other side. If they're 'regular folks' we'll get behind them and wish them well when our own side is trying to kill them if we can do it by hindsight already knowing the outcome. Likely there are Americans today rooting for the Japanese soldiers clubbing the heads in on GI prisoners during the Bataan Death March, or raping every female in Nanking.

Never in million years did I think I'd be 'rooting for' Nazi sailors in a WWII movie... This film showed the stuff this crew was made of. Blood, sweat, guts, and heart. (And bratwurst and sauerkraut.) An incredibly humanizing war epic that decriminalized the "monsters" and lent a different perspective on The Great War for this viewer. FIVE STARS.

A favourite of mine. Worth all the hours to watch it. It literally is a journey into, joy, sadness, terror, suspense.
