I love epic Chinese war/history movies when they're good, but...This didn't seem very accurate or realistic. Started out interesting but quickly defaulted into the usual kung-fu dance contests. Why is it that every movie that contains a sword has to repeatedly show us the "spin" move, as if you could really get away with spinning in a swordfight?...I've seen that 1000 times & it's stupid.

Great scenery which is the only positive feature of this movie. This was supposed to be Genghis' own story so no one could dispute even when he hinted that the Mongolian god was on his side and had answered his prayers. However, even for a fairy tale, it has to make sense. Genghis Khan must be on the top 10 list of the "killing the most in human history" category, yet the mysterious, kind-hearted old wise monk, who had already foreseen the slaughter caused by Khan and subsequently advised a Chinese VIP strongly against purchasing Khan as a slave and on a much later day, begged Khan not to attack China (either action indicated that the monk believed that the future he foresaw wasn't carved in stone and could be altered if his request was accepted), for some unknown reasons, right after his begging was declined by Khan, changed course and chose to sacrifice his life to help Khan escape prison in exchange of saving his monastery. Why can't the super-powered old wise monk just did nothing, let Khan died in prison so that millions of life could be saved. If this was Khan's own fairy tale, it was a lousy one. One more thing, the movie glorified Genghis Khan's conquering of other Mongolian khans, including his "blood brother", under the banner of protecting and uniting Mongolian people. This superimposing of a hard-done-by family man's head onto the shoulder of a god chosen strong willed and visionary savior sure sell but might have sent out the wrong message that the ends could justify any means. Having said that, if one can totally ignore details and history, this is still an entertaining feel good B movie despite a weak ending.

Great 2007 epic Russian/German movie explicating tribal background of origin of Mongol empire.

Lots of terrific cinematic horses, swords, bows and arrows, armor, landscapes, romance.

The Merkit warrior masks were particularly impressive.

Did feel long but did like it - gave me a new appreciation of Ghenis Khan's life. Not for everyone though... not for really young, and not sure if my spouse would like it due to its pace, though he like historic stuff. I agree it is kind of a cross between historical documentary and fiction like 300.

I thought that the film was very well done. It showed how much Tegmudgin struggled during his early life, and the sacrifices he made for his family.

Poorly paced and put together movie. Could have been good if pacing was better and/or some explanatory narration was included. Fight scenes seemed overly exaggerated compared to the rest of the movie. Kind of a cross between historical documentary and fiction (like 300, but not so bloody/ridiculous).
